Many readers of Astronomy magazine teach science or participate in outreach activities to share the excitement of astronomy with the public. How about a forum for those topics?
That’s a very good idea! I used to teach it and also participated in outreach programs. An astronomy club I used to belong to gave public observing sessions at Glacier Point in return for free access to Yosemite.
I teach a stargazing class at our local Vo-Tech school in Stilwell, Oklahoma.
This is an excellent topic idea! As a member of the Barnard-Seyfert Astronomical Society, we perform quite a bit of outreach and education for the general public through star parties. We also do school programs. I would love to hear about what others are doing as I’m sure there are some great ideas out there we could adopt.
Excellent idea! I provide astronomy PowerPoint presentations and operate an 8" original Alvin Clark telescope at Chabot Space and Science center. I always explain to our guests about what we’re observing. I also have my own small home observatory.
Again , tried to give your post a “like” but I’m being denied the opportunity . I guess giving likes must be a bad thing ?
Hello. Thanks for trying. I see the post has 8 likes, so liking it is possible. Perhaps it’s some setting for your account. But I will consider it liked
It’s very strange . I guess my posts are not being limited any more . We will see what happens from here on out .
We too do astronomy outreaches and programmes here in Sri Lanka. It’s interesting, and now on the way of starting an astronomy club, for the ones with passion, but without money. We are trying to make astronomy a study for all, not only for a specific set in the society.
Love such a forum!
Yeah they limit your posts for the first day. I had the same message
I came close to deleting myself from the forum as it was brand new and in trying to help it get off the ground , I was getting dinged for posting . It’s got a long way to go if it ever wants to get back to what it was back in the early to mid or late 2000’s . I think it went away right around 2010 ?
I am interested to see where it goes
Hopefully it builds into what it used to be …
Hello Dr. Fraknoi. I have known about you for years as I used your textbook in College. I have taught astronomy informally to elementary and secondary school students when I was active in the Telescopes In Education Program from 1994 to 2008. Now that I retired to Phoenix Arizona I plan to work with local STEM high schools and the Science Museum here as soon as I receive my new Lunt H-Alpha solar telescope in June of this year. Here is a photo of me teaching solar astronomy to a group of elementary school students in Ranco Palos Verdes California.in October 2007
Thanks for your kind words. My textbook is now completely free on line: http://bit.ly/astronomytextbook – part of a nonprofit project called OpenStax. Glad to hear you are devoting your retirement to doing education and outreach with students. Good for you!
@AndrewFraknoi i appreciate how your borrowed a couple of things from Carl Sagan. Its hard to beat the Cosmic Calendar to put things in perspective
