Its an interesting idea, but how would you direct them to go around something that can be thousands of light years across?
This could very well be possible, but the round trip time would be a factor. For the nearest stars it would be on the order of decades. Anything else could be centuries or even more. Across a galaxy hindreds of thousands of years. Species go extinct over these times. Intergalactic? Forget it.
