What is Astronomy?

Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects, space, and the universe as a whole. It involves the observation and analysis of stars, planets, moons, comets, galaxies, and other cosmic phenomena. Astronomers seek to understand the origins, evolution, and physical properties of these objects, as well as the laws that govern their motion and interactions.

There are several major branches of astronomy, including:

  • Observational astronomy: Collects data using telescopes and other instruments.
  • Theoretical astronomy: Uses models and simulations to explain astronomical phenomena.
  • Astrophysics: Focuses on the physics behind celestial bodies and events.
  • Cosmology: Studies the structure and evolution of the universe on a large scale.
  • Planetary science: Examines planets, moons, and planetary systems.

To me , it’s a pleasant and relaxing night under the stars attempting to grab the best image through the eyepiece of the given object or objects desired for the nights viewing session . Watching shadow transits and GRS transits on Jupiter has always been a favorite of mine for suburban sky viewing . No worries about light pollution . At a dark sky site , taking advantage of favorite DSOs is in order . But the mellow nature of a peaceful viewing session is what Astronomy is all about for me . It’s certainly a most relaxing experience and why I’ve never taken the dive into astrophotography .
YMMV .

For me, its a time to decompress under the stars. I sit there and just look up sometimes, especially on a really dark night. I gave up trying to get “the best” image and went for the image that my eye likes. There is something magical when you are out and it is approaching midnight and all of the sudden the sky opens up and becomes very clear and the atmosphere settles down. Combine all of the above with a fine single malt scotch and you are in for a great night.

Right ! Sans the scotch . That stuff got me in a lot of trouble at one time .
But a puff or two of some cannabis works for me
But yeah visual astronomy is a very relaxing thing .

I’m a lightweight . It doesn’t take much for me . And a slight buzz is all I’m really looking for at this point . I’m an old guy now of 67 years so … The drink just tears my intestines up . Burning and bad indigestion . I gave up the drink about 15 years ago due to the non iron clad stomach I possess .
