Egypt 2027 total eclipse: what a White Desert observing plan needs to get right

Many eclipse travelers are understandably focused on Egypt for 2 August 2027. From a local-operations perspective, however, choosing a point inside the path of totality is only one part of the plan. Reaching a desert site safely, protecting observing equipment, and keeping a group comfortable before and after totality all matter just as much.

Our team is based in Bahariya Oasis and works in Egypt’s White Desert. For anyone considering this region, these are the practical questions I would put near the top of the checklist:

  • How much buffer time is built into the transfer from Cairo?
  • Does the desert section use suitable 4x4 vehicles and experienced local drivers?
  • What are the arrangements for shade, water, meals and toilets at the viewing area?
  • Is there a clear plan for accommodation or desert camp, charging and equipment storage?
  • What is the backup plan if road access, permits, weather or other local conditions change?

For 2027 we are organizing local ground support that can include Cairo transport, 4x4 vehicles, local guides, accommodation or desert camp, meals, and a planned viewing location inside the path of totality. Exact arrangements and the final viewing point must still be confirmed according to access, permits and operating conditions; no one can guarantee weather or the viewing outcome.

I would be interested to hear what experienced eclipse observers consider essential at a remote viewing site. Power? Early site access? A clear horizon? Secure equipment storage? If you are planning for an astronomy club, photography workshop or scientific group, you are also welcome to reply with your practical requirements, and we can discuss whether a dedicated group arrangement would fit.
